Which Window Treatments Offer the Most Privacy?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like most homeowners, getting window treatments in Fort Myers that give you privacy and noise blocking to maintain your sanctuary is a top consideration. Any window treatment is better than an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, particularly on hard to cover windows.

Improving Privacy on Hard to Cover Windows

Most large, square windows in your house are a snap to cover with just about any window treatment such as Fort Myers shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

However, there are some situations when you need a particular style of window treatment to provide adequate privacy and light control. These might be:

  • Windows in the bathroom where water and humidity may damage fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and thin where window treatments can be knocked around when the door opens or shuts.

  • Irregular windows like eyebrows, round windows, bay windows, etc., where normal store-bought blinds and shades can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Big windows that can be hard to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you need window treatments that go the distance to add privacy to your space.

As a bonus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The window treatments we recommend most for privacy are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is what you want. If you want to let light in and see outside, just give the louvers a tilt. For tall or high windows, you can always keep the louvers tilted at an angle to let light in while still maintaining privacy.

Interior shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent outsiders from seeing into your home. Though they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window covering gives you at least some privacy, there are a few that perform poorer than others. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a a light feeling to a room. Yet they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, particularly at night.

Another window treatment we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can bend and/or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t totally shut the blinds because of breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
